Hey Clinic has invested in and developed in several technology enhancements in order to provide the highest quality patient care. In 2008 the clinic began developing its own electronic medical record (EMR) software named Aqueduct™ to improve accuracy, and data flow Individualized pre-surgery checklists have also been established to maximize patient safety and improve quality outcomes. In addition, inspired by aviation safety, we developed an intra-operative checklist software, called 3Greens™, which is used during many of our surgical cases. When designing our new office space, we invested in the latest technology available for low-dose x-ray imaging. EOS imaging provides a bi-planar standing x-ray that reduces radiation exposure (up to 98% less than traditional x-rays) and provides high quality images for our patients. We are currently the only independent clinic in North Carolina that offers this cutting edge technology.
The EOS Imaging System is a revolutionary advance in x-ray imaging. Using Nobel Prize-winning technology, the ultra-low-dose system scans our patients in an upright, weight-bearing position in seconds. This allows the doctor to see the natural way that their joints interact with their musculoskeletal system, making it ideal for diagnosing spinal conditions such as scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylolisthesis, disc herniation, spinal stenosis, sciatica, and lower back pain.Precise 3D models
The EOS system enables 3D models to be generated. 3D models can help patients and their families visualize their condition in a way not possible before. Monitoring the progression of the patient's condition in 3D can help to make decisions on treatment, such as bracing or surgery. If surgery is necessary, 3D planning tools allow the physician to simulate the procedure and communicate the goals of surgery prior to the operation.
EOS achieves its high-quality, precision images using the lowest dose of radiation - 50% to 85% less than traditional x-rays. And with the EOS Micro Dose, a 98% reduction in radiation can be achieved.* Each scan takes less than 20 seconds for adults and 15 seconds for children. EOS technology also provides more precise measurement and 3D imaging, which give us the information to determine the best paths of treatment for all our patients.

When I learned about the incredible potential of the EOS imaging system, I realized there wasn't even a question about whether I should install it in our clinic. The advanced precision it offers makes the difference between good treatment and the best treatment possible. The reductions in radiation alone make it crucial to our patients' safety, but the fact that it offers such high quality, precise imaging and the ability to determine the best treatment plan possible makes it indispensable to our practice and our ability to improve our patients' lives.
In the early years of the Hey Clinic, Hey Clinic chose the FileMaker Platform to create another custom application for assessing patient outcomes and gathering data at each stage of medical care. By 2008, he had seen such success with his app that he hired a full-time programmer and began the in-house creation of a custom FileMaker electronic medical record (EMR) program, known as Aqueduct. The custom app running on both desktops and iPads has since become an advanced medical practice management solution to capture data.
The custom EMR created using The FileMaker Platform also tracks family history of disease, an important predictor for Dr. Hey. The app also stores X-rays and other imaging histories, as well as medical records, encounter notes, billing information, a scheduling calendar, and more. After an appointment is complete, the clinician/provider prints a summary and outcome of the visit which is given to the patient. Simultaneously, the clinic’s billing staff receives and processes payment records and receipts. They then can provide an invoice to the patient via e-mail or e-print.
3Greens was developed by Dr Hey, both a surgeon/pilot, who took inspiration from aviation, and wanted to bring the same level of safety and process control into the operating room. Aviation created a system using checklists to take a complex problem and simplify it into standard work. By introducing checklists to the operating room, a surgeon can feel peace of mind knowing that each critical step of a procedure has been performed. 3Greens allows users to create a custom checklist, which captures data points, tracks times, and provides a transcript to keep your surgical data safe and in one location.
