Lisa Ganley has severe scoliosis in an “S” shape and she wore a brace in Middle School and High School. However, the brace did not stop her curve from progressing into adulthood.
“I should have been doing more physical therapy, but I wasn’t having pain, so I just kept going on with my life,” Lisa said.
She said that her curve pain increased after delivering her children.
A year between x-ray’s revealed her curve progressed.
Dr. Hey met with her and gave her the options of Schroth physical therapy or to undergo surgery.
“I decided to do Schroth therapy and go really intense with it,” Lisa said. “It made a huge difference.”
After working intensely with a Schroth physical therapist and doing her Schroth home exercise program fives days a week for about 20-30 minutes, she has seen a really big difference.
Her next x-ray in 3 months showed that her curve stopped progressing.
What is Schroth Physical Therapy
Schroth is a type of scoliosis-specific physical therapy designed to strengthen and retrain the muscles of the back and core to hold the spine in improved alignment. The goal is to elongate, de-rotate, and stabilize the spine. The Schroth method consists of stretches, strengthening exercises, breathing techniques, and postural training exercises designed to address each individual curve type.
