Deciding to Have Scoliosis Surgery

At Hey Clinic, we take a LOT of time to help our pediatric, adolescent and adult patients fully understand their diagnoses. It is THEIR BODY and THEIR CHOICE. The Hey Clinic team will take patients through a “Shared Decision-Making” dialogue. This is a decision that will affect a patient for the rest of their life and Dr. Hey’s team understands how important it is for everyone to be well informed.

Conservative treatments may not be appropriate for all patients, and we see many patients who chose the surgical route. This is especially true for curves that are in the 40-50 degree range. Scoliosis curves under 40 degrees are sometimes considered for surgery if there is ongoing pain/quality of life issues that do not respond to conservative therapy. And, if curves are over 50 degrees surgery is usually strongly considered.

Patient Success Story – 12 year old Elizabeth

Twelve year old Elizabeth’s scoliosis was treated with Schroth Physical Therapy and 3D CAD CAM bracing. Unfortunately her curve continued to progress to 56 degrees. Bracing and Schroth compliance were challenging for her, which may have contributed to her curve progression. Her parents decided to have her curve progression addressed through scoliosis surgery.

Elizabeth had her surgery and recovered quickly. She was back to cheerleading and even took up the sport of diving! She showed our team a new dress that showed off her back. She was proud and confident with her new posture and ready to transition into high school and beyond.

Conservative treatment vs. surgery

Despite our best efforts using conservative treatments some curves still progress. If a curve gets into the range where scoliosis surgery could be considered, we will discuss that option so the patient as well as the family can make an informed choice. We are also ready to discuss insurance coverage and any questions regarding costs.

It is important to note that about 60% of AIS scoliosis curves will progress during adulthood, so we always recommend lifetime follow-up. Maybe it’s time to visit Hey Clinic and get a second opinion on bracing, Schroth, and surgical options for your scoliosis care! Make an appointment today.
