Omar Singletary discovered her scoliosis when she went through a complete physical exam before going away for college.
“I didn’t know before then,” she said. “I don’t know how no one knew.”
The doctor told her she may need surgery, but she and her parents were not comfortable moving forward and they decided not to go through with the surgery.
Without any treatment, the pain in her back increased and she decided to visit the Hey Clinic to figure out what her next steps were.
She encouraged early screening so that other patients will not get to the point of back pain she carries.
Studies recommend annual scoliosis screening in children and adolescents ages 10-18. We actually recommend screening before age 10, especially for girls.
