Anjili Gomes, a new medical assistant at the Hey Clinic, started her involvement at the clinic through Careguard, the non-profit set up by Dr. Hey to encourage the next generation of healthcare workers.
During the internship, Dr. Hey talked about how every human is precious. He gave them shells to paint that represented the patient and providers. In addition, he explained that not only should the provider be okay with a decision for someone’s care, but the patient themselves should feel comfortable with the decision.
Anjili carries the shell representing the patient around with her to constantly remind her of the importance of her role in supporting patients.
She was able to do the internship with her sister who started a medical club at Jordan High School.
“[The internship] changed who I was,” Anjili said. “Dr. Hey practices what he preaches.”
before shadowing Dr. Hey, he asked Anjili to read the passage on the good samaritan in Luke 10:25-37. After reading the story, she started to cry because it was her first time seeing a doctor invested in going beyond their physical complications and praying for patients.
“It’s really amazing, it’s life changing,” Anjili said.
